 | king laurin and his rosegarden| the rose of memory (once upon a time)
once upon a time there was a queen
all she once had now was lost
her man in battle he died
high on steep rocks she fled with her son
to keep the small boy safe

 but the time passed by
 the boy
 he grew up ....
and he found his fathers sword

 and the queen she sad
she knew that all the bad came from war and fighting and hate
but now it was too late

mummy, mummy, there's a special rose
 I will pick for you
 the rose of memory
 the rose of memory

 you rove around
 this way and that
 all up and down
 back and forth
go on and some day you will find
the tower of your own memory

 black hills you'll see
 white hill you'll see
and in between, and in between
stands the tower of your own memory

 the tower of memory
 the tower of memory

 you've got the task
 you have to ask
 but no one knows
 the meaning
go on and some day you will find
the tower of your own memory

 black hill you'll see
 white hills you'll see
and in between, and in between
stands the tower of your own memory

one evening as the sun was going down, the prince came to a small lake. Not far from the path he saw a girl standing there, who seemed to be packing flowers. She wore a belt embroidered with gold and a dark veil fell down over her face. As the prince went by, he greeted her. She looked away, so that he couldn't look her in the face, bat she returned his greeting. The prince asked her the way to the tower of memory.

the girl said: follow me and I'll show you the way
I'll even take off my veil

 maybe I'm doing wrong
 maybe you don't belong
but somehow I trust in you

 on the hill
 in the sunset
 look there stands the tower

 and if you're near
 you will see
 how it is intertwined

 myriads of roses
 make up this wondrous tower

 a fresh clean spring
 watering
 the rose of memory

 the finest flower
 you've ever seen
 the rose of memory

 and if you're near
 you will see
 the rose of memory

 the finest flower
 you've ever seen
 the rose of memory

once upon a time people lived in simplicity without envy or contempt. There was no war or killing, everything could be put to rights in goodness. In time people became very rich and then conflicts began. There came wars and roomers of wars and nearly every man was killed. In the end a queen gathered together the surviving women und children and led them into the mountains, and there they chose to live. At last the women succeeded in creating peace and in order to keep the peace they decided to make a vow. Each one brought a rose branch which the then wove together. And so the tower of memory came to be.

 Bind, bind women bind
 Thorns and branches intertwined
For all times a warning cry
 Never let our children die

 Bind, bind women bind
the tower is here to remind us
for all times a warning cry
 never let our children die

the good times have long since passed.

Smile why must you be so downhearted
when you laugh my heart laughs too

smile there's a way out of sadness
we have a chance, it's up to us

 I...
 You ?...
 I never had a woman
I ask you now to be my bride

Why can't we start all over
 a new beginning
 take a hold on life

the tower is nothing but a breeze
 a memory, a warning cry
of all the roses once alive
 there's only one that survives

now I should take this rose and go forth from here, because the sun is going down and the tower is fading.

 You got the rose
you got the rose with you
although the tower is no more

 You got the rose
you got the rose with you
and the memory of ages past

 When there was no hate
 when there was no killing

The rose should be our shelter
the rose should be our treasure

 The tower is fading away.

Hello, you seem like two people in love. Have you got anything for me. Well, you little dwarf. I've only got this belt here, but I'll gladly give it to you. Hey you two, I'm just a poor gardener and on these bare rocks nothing will grow.
Well then, little dwarf. I'll give you this rose I have here. Go and plant it on the highest peak.
Oh, if I plant this wondrous rose like you told me in a few years the whole mountain will be covered with roses.

The dwarf took the rose of memory
so beautiful, so marvellous, so red
high on the top of the rock he planted the rose
and with the passing of the years the whole mountain was covered
 with roses

The other dwarf took the golden belt and ripped it up
and made a fine golden silk thread out of it
around the great mountain he wove the silken thread
and from this moment the silk thread became the border to the
mysterious mountain with the red roses, the so called Rose garden

Well, as you heard, in time the rose turned into a beautiful garden, where King Laurin lived with his dwarfs. It was a glorious kingdom that Laurin ruled over, majestic and beautiful, and the people far and wide heard rumour of the wonderful garden, which was surrounded by a single silken thread. Yet no-one was permitted to come too near. Laurin demanded a terrible toll from anyone who dared to step into this kingdom...

 The rose garden

 Be surprised and admire
 Everybody's desire
 Roses covered with roses
 Smell the sweet smell

 Roses covered with roses
 Smell the fragrance of roses
 A kaleidoscope of colours...

.... but you have to take care if you trample down my silk thread
 woe be to you
if you set foot in my empire

 Be surprised and admire
 Everybody's desire
 Do you hear the ringing
 It's only the bird's singing

 Silvery sound all around
 An age-old lullaby
 Sweet medley of voices

.... but you have to take care if you trample down my silk thread
 woe be to you
if you set foot in my empire

 You can watch and admire
 Everybody's desire
 But don't come to near

I will have your right hand
 And your left foot
 If you come to near

So you have to take care if you trample down my silk thread
 woe be to you
if you set foot in my empire
 yeah

Despite all his riches, Laurin felt lonely in his mountain home. He had everything that was to have, but he longed for a bride; all his suiting met with rejection, yet again Sybill, the lovely daughter of a neighbouring king came into his mind. Laurin started to hatch a plot; yes, he had his magic hood, which rendered him invisible...

If you trample down my silk thread
 woe be to you
if you set foot in my empire
 Yeah

The robbery (If I can't steal your heart I can steal you)

She lives veiled in her castle behind unbridgeable big walls, big walls
And there is no chance to get closer to her: Alas!
Hey listen, you put in the shade all that I ever have seen
 In my life
So you have got to be mine
 Be mine
So you have got to be mine

Cause in my heart and in my mind
I am King - You are Queen
 And if I can't
If I can't steal your heart
Still I can always .... steal .... you

I love your rosy cheeks. I want to feel your blond hair blowing in the wind, Sybill
Oh I cannot sleep a wink all night. I dream of you
I love the way you move, the way you run
I love the way you're having fun, Sybill
So you have got to be mine
 Be mine
So you have got to be mine

Cause in my heart and in my mind
I am King - You are Queen
 And if I can't
If I can't steal your heart
Still I can always ... steal ... you

If you leave your hole and corner town
I'll be in the tree top with my crown
I'll cover you with my magic hood
Bring you to a land where you'll feel good

And she was gone. Deeplove, Sybill's brother, couldn't understand it. Who could have stolen his sister? He swore to himself not to rest until he had found his sister again. He rode on for weeks and weeks until he finally arrived at the court of Diehard of Bern, the heroic warrior. With him at this court were other gallant fighters and there are many, many stories told about them. But Deeplove felt some how out of place among these heroes...

The heroes (the rabble cries for heroes)

I've been told that in these times there's a need for heroes
I've been told that in these time we need strong men
I have heard that we need warriors against evil
I just can't retire from this game

There's a gripping style of life for you if you agree
You are a spiritual leader, the idol of the boys
Girls in crowds burst into tears when they see you
I just can't retire from this game
No, I can't retire from this game
I simply cannot get out of this game

 The rabble cries for heroes
They all cried out for heroes
 Hero set us free
 Unravel the plot
 Big hero we love you

My armour's like a heavy load
It's impossible to swim against the tide
 You have to keep up
 Appearances

Just can't retire from this game
No. I can't retire from this game
I simply cannot get out of this game

 The rabble cries for heroes
They all cried out for heroes
 Hero set us free
 Unravel the plot
 Big hero we love you

 Crying out for heroes

They all cry out for heroes
 Hero set us free
 Unravel the plot
 .... we love you

Deeplove told Diehard of the robbery of his sister Sybill, and Diehard showed his willingness to help Deeplove in his search. Firebrand, the cunning, hardened warrior, guessed immediately that only Laurin could be behind this dastardly deed. No-one but the enchanting dwarf king, with his magic hood and the belt which gave him the strength of 12 men, could have devised this deception. And so they move northwards: Diehard, Deeplove, Firebrand, Whittaker the witless and Wolfheart, about to embark on a new adventure.

 The ride (never say die!)

 Let us ride with gallantry
 Win the medal of bravery
 Mount the horse
 Win the spurs
 Never say die!

Let us fight und set her free
 Bring the girl to liberty
 We'll break that spell
 Laurin! Go to hell!

Sometimes you feel you've got there
 You've reached your destination
 While you're far a field

When purple rocks dazzle your eyes
The abyss takes you by surprise!
 Never say die!

After some days they where almost there. They had already been able to see the wondrous majesty of the Rose garden from afar. They drew nearer, and were overwhelmed by the beauty of this paradise. Only one of their number, the impetuous Whittaker, didn't allow himself to be taken in ... awe by the sight. He .... leapt about like a wild man, lopping off the rose blooms and trampling down the glory of the garden.
And suddenly, as if from nowhere, King Laurin was upon them - only 3 feet tall, riding on a pony, but in full splendour - with a golden armour and a sword of the choicest steal. A terrible fight ensued between Laurin and Diehard. Not until Diehard's armourer, Firebrand, shouted to him to tear in two the magic belt which gave Laurin the strength of 12 men, did the course of the fight turn around.

 The encounter (Gentlemen's agreement)

 What good is that
 You're all cracked up
 What good is that
 You're all cracked up
 I will destroy
 As much as I can
 Let me ruin
 The whole garden

 Now cool off man
 Enjoy Laurin's garden
 You'd better keep quiet

 We didn't come
 To lose our good manners
So let us keep the peace

 What good ist that
 You're all cracked up
 What good is that
 You're all cracked up
 I will take him
 By his feet and
 Strike him against
 This ruby rock wall

 Now cool off man
It would be madness to break a rose
 Look out!
Let us send a messenger to Laurin
So we can deal with him

What do you think you're doing coming into my kingdom? Have you got no manners at all? You think you're heroes, but just wait and see who's king of this land, you dirty rabble!

 Attention the dwarf seems weak
But he has got a belt which gives him 12-men-power

You said you would take my feet an strike me against the walls
You'll pay for that unjustified is what you do
Oh why did you come to trample down my silken thread
Who told you to destroy my roses
 Now I'll have
Your left foot and your right hand as punishment

Oh no he's in a bad way
You should try to rip up the power-giving belt

You've got no chance I just can't forgive
No way out to die is cast I've got my magic hood with me
Your strike has missed but I hit hard
Look I'm here the unbeatable oh can't you see
 Now I'll have
Your left foot and your right hand as punishment

Oh Lord get off your horse
And try to overcome on foot the dwarf

You've got no chance I just can't forgive
Why did you into my kingdom come
To trample down my silken thread
You'll pay for that unjustified is what you do
It's more than I can take

At last Diehard had succeeded: Laurin was beaten. His anger raging, Diehard wanted to finish Laurin of, but then Sybill appeared on the scene, escorted by her dwarf maids, and she managed to bring the men to their senses. How she was overjoyed to see her brother, Deeplove, again! She blushed before the intrepid heroes, but she bravely interceded for the defeated dwarf king. Laurin, she explained, had always treated her well, and he never came too near.

The mediation (I did never touch her purity)

Hang on with your judgement don't jump to conclusions be careful with your words just let me say I have tried to treat her like a princess I have tried to fulfil every wish she'd ever had in her life can't you see I love her But I never touched her purity But I never touched her purity I have tried to conquer her heart without success love can never be imposed but she's still pure she's still pure I'm a dwarf and she's an elf-queen so what can I do I've got everything I want except what I can't get. But I never touched her purity But I never touched her purity I am sad that you came to set her free But I never touched her purity

After this Diehard ordered that peace be made with Laurin, and Laurin invited them to come into one of his caves with him. A feast was to be given in honour of his new found friend.
But during the feast, while the friends were being overwhelmed by the splendour of Laurin's cave, Laurin tried one more time to win the favour of Sybill.

The Court of Laurin (the last word has not yet been said)

Mysterious glacial ice in a glittering cave
Bright reflections in a crystal palace
A thousand rainbow colours on the walls
 Ruby stones shine out

A real wonder .... what a splendour! A real wonder

 Oh Sybill take my heart
I don't need no silver and no gold
I find my fortune in your eyes
 Don't break my heart
The last word is not yet been said
 Oh Sybill take my heart
 Can't you see the consequences
It's a matter of dead and life
 Don't break my heart
The last word is not yet been said

 Take off your armour
 Put on your party dress
 At the court of Laurin
 Maids of honour come along
 Singing a sweet love song
 At the court of Laurin

Meat and wine! It's all mine!

 Oh Sybill take my heart
 Can't you see the consequences
It's a matter of dead and life
 Don't break my heart
The last word is not yet been said

If you don't agree to my plan
It's the end for all of you
 Listen I'm not joking
It's a matter of dead and life

But all his suiting came to nothing. Filled with bitterness, Laurin overcame the heroes who had been enjoying the abundance of the king's wine cellars and had them bound and thrown into the darkest dungeons. There! That would be the revenge on Sybill. Yet Sybill put all her eggs into one basket; she secretly sneaked into where her friends lay imprisoned, set them free, and brought theirs weapons and armour back to them. How Laurin ranted and raved as he heard of this treason. He blew as hard as he could on his hunting horn and dwarfs came running from far and wide; and soon a fierce battle was raging ...

 The battle (instrumental)

During the battle, things did not always look good for Diehard's heroes; it was only after Sybill had given them all magic rings that their fortune changed. The dwarfs now lay about in a battlefield covered with their own blood. Laurin was carried off captive and had to earn his bread as the jester at the court of Whittaker the witless. How the once powerful king of the Dolomites had been humbled and humiliated! It was not until many years later that he made his escape. He returned to his once beloved mountains, to the wondrous Rose garden, but which now he could only curse ...

The spell (Roses should never be seen there again)

 Roses have betrayed me
 Roses have dug my grave
If the men had not seen the roses they would never have found me

Now let me take my revenge
 Let me pronounce a spell
Let me turn the whole Rosegarden into stone

 Neither by night
 Nor by day
Should roses ever been seen there again

So all at one the roses turned to stone and the mountains which one blossomed majestically was now naked and barren.
But in his spell Laurin had forgotten the time which is neither night nor day, and that is why the enchanted garden still displays its roses at twilight.
And at this time men come out of their houses to watch and wonder and they become imbued with the good old times there was no hatred or killing...

 The alp glow (instrumental)
